DES MOINES, Iowa– Des Moines Police and the Animal Rescue League of Iowa removed 24 cats from horrible living conditions.
According to the ARL, the home was covered in feces and garbage. All of the cats were suffering from upper respiratory infections, ear mites, pink eye, and fleas. Some of the cats’ eyes were matted shut.
The ARL says one of the kittens, named Ozzy, had such a severe eye infection it caused one of his eyes to rupture.
All 24 cats are currently in the care of the ARL and are receiving treatment, but the road to recovery won’t be easy.
Gray wolf found dead along I-80 in eastern Iowa, DNR says“When you’re talking about 24 cats, that’s a lot. So, that’s going to be a long time to get them through that whole process. Getting them medical attention, the proper food and water to get to where they are healthy again. So, there is a process to that and you can’t just do that overnight,” said Josh Colvin, Animal Services Manager.
Colvin said when approaching a large intake case like this, it’s important to treat each animal individually.
“Some are going to take longer than the others, and it’s going to be a long journey for them. Especially if there are surgeries and eye removals and that kind of stuff. So, we just want to make sure that they are where they need to be so we can get them up for adoption.”
With large intake cases like this, the ARL likes to encourage anyone that is interested in adopting or fostering a dog to do so. To help, all adoption fees are $50 for cats and dogs over six months of age, starting Friday. The special rate lasts until Sunday. To learn more, visit the ARL’s website here.
